Blyxa Japonica is a relatively new plant made popular in the aquarium hobby by the master, Takashi Amano. The use of the plant in Amano’s ‘Nature’ aquariums caused its popularity amongst hobbyists. Since this is a relatively new plant, not much is know about it and owners of this plant learn about it everyday.

Blyxa Japonica is primarily a foreground to midground (more foreground in my experience) plant. Blyxa is an alternative to Dwarf Saggitaria (Sagittaria subulata), Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula) and Lilaeopsis species; it is also less.

I started with 10 Blyxa plants that I obtained through a hobbyist. After 6 weeks they started getting bushy and I pulled the plant from the substrate and removed part of the plant and replanted it. Currently the foreground of my 75G is covered with this beautiful plant. The leaves of the plant develop a rustish tint in high light. CO2 seems to be a necessity for this plant

Blyxa Japonica is a stem plant. I tried Dwarf Hairgrass, Glossostigma and Saggitaria in the foreground before I came across Blyxa. The other forground plants were always uprooted by my cadre of MTS, Blyxa has survived since it is a bushy plant and roots well.

I've read that with high dosages of iron it will get a red-orange color too. I'd sure like to try some--so if you ever want to cull some runners I'd love to take them off your hands

Perhaps when we do the plant of the month we should also include a pronunciation. I find that almost always the pronunciation I have in my head is incorrect

I know--I always get mocked when I mis-pronounce all the plant and fish names when I'm talking to serious plant people, though some people are kind enough to overlook my ignorance.

I got a small tuft of this stuff recently, and I was wondering why the heck it was turning orange-brownish. Now I know.

Amazing growth rate on that plant.
