Default New Khuli Loach---I am trying again!

My LFS had a kuhli loach in and since I have one at home that is lonely I decided to buy it. Right now it is in the Q-tank so I can keep an eye on it because I had an awful experience with my first batch of Khuli loaches (hence I only have one now) and I have heard many people are having trouble with them. I have noticed that this new loach’s stripes do not go all the way around his body. Is this just a color variation or is this a completely different species? Will it be ok with my kuhli?

There are natural color variations, as well as different species, so it's hard to say which is which. IME, the striped ones will all hang out together, even if you have several different species.

I just love my kuhli loaches. I have browns in one tank and striped in another.
If you just have one..you might want to get a few more because they are more comfortable in numbers and you will see more of them

The only difference I've seen is the striped ones will zip directly at the substrate and dive in it. I've not seen the brown ones do that, but there are more hiding places in the tank the browns are in.

I originally bought 6 kuhli loaches a couple months ago but they all died from mysterious seizures except for the one I have now. I wasn't ready to go through all that again b/c it was really hard on me to watch them writher in pain without being able to figure out what was wrong and fix them. When I finally decided to buy him some friend the LFS were not carrying any! I have been keeping my eye out for some and when I went in today they only had one or I would have bought more. So far the one that I bought seems to be doing fine in his Q-Tank but I will keep an eye on him for awhile just to be sure everything is ok.

I am hoping that even though their markings are different they will still get along and hang out together!

Bad news, the new kuhli loach didn't make it through the night. He seemed to be doing alright last night, although he didn't eat but I figured that was just because he was in a new place. I took extra care to aclimate him yesterday but to no avail. There were no markings or outward symptoms that would suggest the cause of death. I guess this is just one of those mysterious kuhli loach deaths...

Khulie loaches are quite vulnerable to being squashed when being netted. I have lost one due to being squashed, and I don't have a problem with the way this particular person deals with netting fish. Someone that isn't being really carefull could be doing them harm.

I know there are other potential reasons that a fish might not survive after leaveing the store, but that is one that I have found to be
