Default Clown Loach Spawn in a Tank

This is truly amazing. Just goes to show you nothing is impossible.

Very impressive! I hope it becomes more common, so these great fish are available without the parasites so common in wild caught species.

As far as I know this is the first documented instance of clowns spawning in a home aquarium. I would love to have it happen with my clowns but somehow I don't think even my "magic" water would do the trick.

Low pH, low temperature
One of the possible reasons for the spawning could be the low pH at which the fish are kept.

"The main tank, where the fish have been for the two years is very soft and acidic," Dunlop said.

"The pH normally sits around 4.5, and up to about 5.5 after a water changes, but drops quite quickly. The newly set up tank had a pH of 7.2 as it was just raw tapwater having sat for about 24-hours, so I reduced the pH down to 4.5 with hydrochloric acid.

"I tested the TDS [Total Dissolved Solids] after seeing the eggs and it was about 75ppm. The pH dropped to 4.1 a day after spawning. According to my local water test, as per the Practical Fishkeeping site, the GH is 3.

I hope this dispels the myth that pH can be to low.

Its a shame he moved them 20 eggs out of thousands are fertile. But thats more eggs then I've seen from mine. Though mine are still young.

I wonder if the problem is they need to have some good age on them and most people don't keep them in a big enough tank for them to live long enough.

it's a step forward though....It's great that they are breeding in home aquaria!

That has to be a huge part of it. This is not a species that the casual hobbyist will spawn because the casual hobbyist (a) likes the tiny, cute clowns and (b) has smaller tanks. I admit that large clowns aren't my thing (but I wouldn't keep a fish that I didn't like/couldn't keep at its "adult" stage)!

This is pretty cool, though...here's hoping for more success for this guy and others like him.
