Default Farlos got Jiggy

We had a good storm last night. When I went to feed the 50 I noticed a pair of farlos looking chummy together on the front glass. A closer inspection showed one with what I assumed was a tube showing. It was literally just a small white bump, but I assume thats what it was.

This morning there were about 52 eggs being tended by dad. This time they really decided to make my life a hassle cause they put the eggs even higher up the front glass than in the past. The topmost eggs are a scant 1/2 inch below the frame. How the heck can I do a wc on a tank when taking out much more than about 5% of the water will expose the eggs?

Remove water from one end and add water at the other end at the same time. Sucks, but it works.

How many of the last clutch made it? This is many more eggs, isn't it?

Yes- in the past they have left mid 30s or so. I have 5-6 young farlos still. They have proved to be one of the harder fry to raise I have tried and probably the slowest growing as well.

Have you been isolating the fry? Wonder if they, like otos, lack a crucial gut bacteria that they get from other fish. Maybe having dad move into isolation with them when they hatch would help?

I don't think that is the case. When they hatch out of the eggs the dad may or may not be around. They tend to scatter in all directions as well.

I am not sure why I have lost so many, I am just happy to have a few for several months now.

One of the problems is with breeder traps I have. Two are those nasty net ones and then another is a large plastic one with vents at each end. The plastic is a better trap, but the fry would be able to fit though the vent slats.

I simply have no place to set up a tank for them to grow in.

They hatched and I let them become lunch for the other fish. I just dont have the space to grow out more fish, especially ones that are that slow growing.

I do have 5-6 I managed to save and keep alive from prior spawns that range from about 1. 5 inch to 2.5 inch.
