Default My Angelfish Spawned!!!

I've had these two angels for two years and I've never seen them spawn. I've assumed that they were either the same sex or just never had the hankering to make babies . Well, last night they spawned and it was an awesome sight to see. I was so stunned. She laid eggs on my powerhead and he fertilized them. As soon as they were done they both swam away and started lip-locking. In less than 10 minutes they both gobbled up all of the eggs. I guess I'll try to catch them again and pull the eggs.

Sonetimes it takes a pair a few times to get it all figured out and raise them right. Other times they never learn. If your twosome is in a community tank, remember many fish will eat their own eggs before they let something else do so and pulling the eggs may be the only option.

Are they mouthbrooders? One of my juvie nyassa peacock females surprised me with 6 fry, now in the 5 gallon. She tumbled them in her mouth for who knows how long (my first exp.), don't know if she let them out at all as there are other cichlids in the tank. Had no idea they were mouthbrooders!!!

No, they are egg-layers. Congrats larissa...hopefully next time, they don't eat them.

All mouth brooders are egglayers. Not all egglayers that take eggs into mouth are mouth brooders.

These angels may or may not get the hang of it. Some do after a few runs where they get further each time. Or you could have a pair that has lost the parenting instincts that have to mesh together to produce results. So many aquarium strain angels don't have those behaviors and have been non parent raised for so long that parenting skills aren't important to the fish.

Are you positive you have a male? Two females do go through the spawning process just like a pair.

Yes, I'm sure. The female laid the eggs with her wide, pink ovipositer and the male went behind her and fertilized them with his longer, narrow ahh, appendege.

I agree with Snake.... these are young parents, noting that this is their first spawn. They may grow out of this munching on the eggs business or they may never outgrow it, as some store grown fish don't. Are there any other fish in the tank? Sometimes they eat them over fear of other fish eating them too.... if you want a successful spawn, you may need to have a separate tank set up ans a slate or something they can spawn on in the main tank. After they are finished, you'd need to remove the slate (or whetever they've spawned on) and place it in the other tank with an air stone for water movement an methylene blue to prevent fungus.

I've had them for a while. They are about 2 years old, I think. It is a community tank. I've been watching them more to see if I can catch them, but I need to get a slate still. Honestly, though, I have no idea what tank to put the eggs in without buying another tank.
