what umber should I shoot for 2 or 3?

There relativly expensive at the LFS's around here anywhere for 10-40$ each.

Are they more of a schooling fish or would they be okay in a small group like I'm trying to find? If I have to I break the bank and buy more but I have a felling my 55 gallon is a little too small for a large ammount.

I would rather do two of them because of the cost however, if they act like cichlids groups of two aren't always a great idea. You know what I meant 1=dominat fish and 1=whipping boy. I'l look them up after I get home thanks guys.

Out of the five I have one that is dominant. I would go with three personally just in case one is dominant. Two would work as well. Maybe get two first and see how they work out you can always add another one later.

Man I have been looking on planet catfish about Synodontis, and theres like 100 diffrent species of them, I guess sizing them isn't going to be as easy as I had thougt, there are two LFS around here that together, have about 8 diffrent type ranging from 4 dollars to forty dollars. I guess I could go and grab a few upside down catfish but I'm not to fond of there looks. I'll try and head to Burien and write down all the names in the near future and post what available to me then out of my selection you could help me decide

There are more than one species sold as upsidedown catfish, so that doesn't mean much either. You'll still have to identify the species.

At one point I had four different species all called upside-down cats. Currently I only have Brachysynodontis batensoda

You asked specifically about syno njassae. Well I have 3 of them in my 90 gal malawi tank, they have lived in harmony with yellow labs, a red zebra, m. greshakei, hap ahli, and a pair of hap obliquedens for several years now. at least 6 years, maybe more. Syno njassae is from lake malawi anyway. most of the other synos are from tanganyika.

only thing there is, syno petricolas like to be in small herds. I have 5 , and wish I would have gotten 10....they love to travel around together, day or night.
