GK- I have been keeping discus duos for some time now. because I have smaller tanks I can only really keep two in a tank. Fortunately, I get them from a breeder who sexes them for sure so I know what they are. What I have found when I have lost one in the past is the remaining one definitely knows there has been a loss and while i cant say they mourn or get dpressed, I do know the survivor behaves differently.

What I have always done when I have had a loss is to replace the one that died with another of the same sex. Keeping a duo does not guarantee getting spawns but I have found that the two bond in some fashion usually.

The duos definitely relate to each other and are always touchy feely, even though they may sometimes squabble. There is no quwstion in my mind that a widow/widower discus is no where near as content as a duo or pair. If there is any way you can sex the survivor, I would reccomend replacing the lost one. What you need to avoid is ending up with 2 males, 2 females should be OK together also.

Twice ive lost the second fish when one of a pair dies withing 2 months. One got really sick and the second was just dead one morning. I dont know why. The only thing I do know is they were both an older pair.
