Hi everyone, I bought a few mystery snail clutches online and I have them in a home made incubator. Today when I checked on them I saw a few dark things on the styrofoam next to the clutches. They are not moving at all. My question is are these the baby snails? If so should I drop them in the water or leave them alone. Like I said they are not moving. If anyone could help me please contact me. Thanks!! ![]() |

Miss you, Old Man

Probably those are the hatchlings--add a few drops of water, and start floating the styrofoam.

They could also be bugs or something else entirely. The hatchlings actually look like tiny snails about 1-2 mm across. They might not move much at first. You will know the clutch is ready to hatch when it turns a whitish gray color. The eggs that are still pare pink are unfertilized. I always manually hatch my clutches when they are ready. Just use a toothpick and gently break open all of the eggs on the outside and squirt or swish the snails from the eggs into a dish of water. Then you can gently roll the clutch in your fingers under water and the babies will fall out. Don't worry about squishing them because they are harder than their egg shells.
