Default raising betta fry?

well, I think I'me gonna give breeding my bettas a try, but thats the easy part. how do ya raise the fry? I've already done a bunch of research on breeding bettas and raising the fry, but I got mixed opinions on food for the fry including everything from raising them exclusively on newly hatched brine shrimp to just saying "feed infusoria" (without saying what kind of infusoria). so how do you raise the fry? please say if you've had expierience.

Feed them microworms. Where are you located, Dorkfish? Are you in the U.S.?

Microworms are good...or brine shrimp. Be careful on the infusoria...I lost an entire brood of a couple hundred betta fry from a preditory variety of infusoria. It was amazing to see....truely ! I noticed my fry swimming funny and then slowly float to the bottom of the tank...where they squiggled a few times and promptly died !

I would then see a white cloud erupt from the bodies and wafte throughout the tank searching out other hapless victims. I really wasn't all that sure what I was seeing and it took me awhile to figure out what was happening in there...I was so fascinated by it all....and I didn't get the water change done quickly enough ! I lost them all......btw... I had used a lettuce leaf as an infusoria source...wont' do THAT again !

Here's a pic of the invasion.....I shined a flashlight in the tank to get a good pic of the "Cloud".......I think Joe would probably appreciate this....lol...sort of like an old 50's B scifi flick.

I would go with straight microworms and live BBS once they were large enough. I've raised whole batches of apisto fry up to 3/4in on nothing but BBS. I eventually start working in chopped mysis, bloodworms, cyclops-eze and granual sized dry food.

I'll probably go with the micro worms, and also I found an article for culturing them so I should be able to keep a good suply going. does anyone know where I can get a few worms to start though? would my LFS have some?

larissa: nope, not in the US, but windsor ontario, the southernmost part of canada.

Hmmm I wonder what the legalities of send a vial of microworms through the mail would be? Ask around at some LFS first. If noone that works there is keeping a culture going, then that store needs to hire more experienced fish keepers. Try local aquarium clubs maybe? worst comes to worst, I'll mail you some.

That's why I was asking because I have sent them within the lower 48 states but I don't think that I'd be comfortable sending them over the border. Plus I'm in Texas and I don't think that making them travel that far would be good for the worms. Check ebay and aquabid. Maybe someone closer to you has them.

I'm here in Ohio, so they'd have a much shorter trip, plus I think they are kinda unkillable. I've started new cultures from an old culture that looked pretty dried out. maybe we could disguise the worms as some sort of commonly mailed item

I got it! I'll mail you some cupcakes with some very special icing. Seriously though, PM me and I'll stick some in a ziplock and put it in a public mailbox. If the mounties come knocking on your door, you can just claim ignorance.

I tried mailing some a couple of weeks ago. First-class mail, culture in a ziploc bag inside a plain envelope. I've done this before in the cooler months. It was returned to me because it was leaking and very smelly so I had to resend it priority mail in a ziploc bag, inside a gladware container, inside a box.

I'd think this is the best time of year to try, not too hot, not too cold. Send me a pm with your address.

I think that it will be fine from Ohio. Here in TX it's already pretty hot.
