But I don't know who the daddy..or the mommy is!!
I have my pl*co in a 15 by himself with some driftwood, java fern and a big wad of java moss. The java moss I aquired a month ago at a fish auction, so I suspect taht there must have been eggs of some kind in it. I only saw 4 or 5...I just did a water change last night and had no clue they were there. The only reason I niticed them was that there is a window partially visible behind the tank and I sat down to look at the pl*c this am. (who is fine). My first thought was shrimp and how did they get there from my shrimp tank..but I guess they could be anything. I snipped off a foot from a pair of panty hose and rubber banded over the filter intake and crumbled up some flake food...I don't know what else to do if anything. I also gave the pl*c his zucchini with garlic. (Fish eats better than me!) What else can/should I do? I don't think I can get any pics becasue they are just to small and transparent right now. Any thoughts on what they may be? My friend has the sales records from the fish auction. I'll se if she can look up where the moss came from and see if I can contact the seller and wee what kind of fry they are. |

that is the best choice, try and figure out what they are. there is likely enough food on the java moss for them to eat but a little crushed flake is not a bad idea, at least it'll feed the critters they are eating now. once they get large they will take other foods. If you can hatch brine shrimp, that's a good fry food. Otherwise try to find "whole freezedried cyclop-eeze". It usually comes in a 30 gram can (about 3" tall, 2.5" diameter) blue/red label and clear lid. This is a red powder that is an excellent fry food. a little messy on the fingers but easy to wash off. I use it so much I just bought a 400 gram container... KYle

My guess is that they are from some 'egg scatterer' species, like tetras, barbs, danios. Could be a number of other fish, but they seem the most likely.
Do they still have yolk sacs? Once they are used up, they can pick at microbes and bits of algae for subsistence until they're old enough to start looking for small bits of dry food. Len

possibly something like that but more likely an adhesive egg layer such as killifish or rainbows. barb, tetra and danio eggs tend to fall through to the substrate in my experiences. Kyle

I did not see yolk sacks. Whatever it is has survived having kuhli loahes and hillstream loaches in the tank, and cleanings.
I am running this tank with no substrate...plain glass ...at the present, and have cleaned the bottom well when vaccuming. I would guess whatever it is would have been stuck in the moss. It is a big mass of java moss. I can only imagine what I've cleaned out of the tank with water changes. rainbow fish would be nice...I have a couple of varieties already. |
