Lost and Confused

I'm so bummed, my nero ram jumped out of his tank onto the carpet sometime yesterday. I had temporarily removed the lid when I was doing some work on the tank and had forgotten to put it back on when I left for work. When I got home he was all dried out on the carpet.

aaaaaaaaaaww, sar, I'm sorry. If only they would listen to us--now, you guys stay in the tank, nice and wet and happy, and DON'T JUMP OUT!!! I've had two lovely male Malawi Taiwan Reef males disappear in my 55--and I"m sure that the p.polleni, Black Jack, is responsible. At least their brother, Sammy, who is a gorgeous blue, is still alive. Gotta get this 125g set up--lots to do still.

I had a similar loss: I found one of my Yoyo loaches on the floor this morning...crispy critter. It was near some clothes that I had on the floor so I didn't see it until it was too late. I've had one jump before, but it wasn't long before I found it (with my foot) so I was able to save it that time, but not today. I only have about a 1 inch gap in the front and about a 1.5in in the back that isn't covered by my glass top. I hear them "splash" at the surface all the time at night, but I never thought one would have jumped. Now I only have 3 Yoyos. Don't they know its better in the tank than out?

Covering that space with some egg-crate that's cut to shape is an easy fix.
Floating snails are starting to drop out...And the ABN's are in a growth spurt!

When I moved into my new house, I moved my two twenty talls first. The bottom one houses my eels. After setting the two twenties up and putting the occupants in, I went to get my 55. I set it up and was filling it when i noticed a fuzzy sausage-looking thing under the twenties...turns out one of my peacock eels had tried to abscond. He didn't get far. I picked his fuzz-covered form up and put him back in the tank where he sank to the bottom, immobile. I thought I'd return later to fish his corpse out but I was in for a surprise. He'd sloughed his slime coat, along with his blue carpet-fuzz sweater and was laying on the bottom, gasping. After removing the discarded lump of nast from the tank, I watched him for close to thirty minutes. His respiration slowed, his color came back and he slithered under his rock. He still runs the tank today. His new name is Lazarus.

I need to get more excel--even just dosing my teeny 12, I'm almost out! But things are coming along nicely--the ocelot sword should bloom within a few days. That's a first for me--swords are one of those plants that seldom are happy in my setups, so I'm pleased as punch!
Pondering tearing down the 20 and setting it up planted FW for the african leaf fish and guppies or endlers like I'd orginally planned the tank...Would mean buying more substrate, but I think it would do better than the SW setup. Hmmm....

Well...I did my weekly water change a day early so I could divide my anubias plant (My OCD wouldn't let me wait till tomorrow). I am slowly turning my plastic planted tank into a real planted tank.

I was feeding my fish last night and as usual opened the top to feed the fish. I fed the smaller fish and was then looking for the Betta so I could feed him on the other side of the tank. I looked all over and could not see the Betta anywhere. The tank lights and the TV were the only lights on in the room. So I turned on the room lights and noticed the Betta on the floor.
He got so excited to eat he jumped right out of the tank. I didn't see him because it was dark in the room. He was on the floor for 30 seconds or so and I got him right back into the tank. It's been about 24 hrs. and he seems to be fine. Could have been much worse. I notice he's not jumping for any food tonight...Hopefully he learned his lesson.

Many years ago, I had a betta in a bowl. I was cleaning the bowl (actually just rinsing the marble substrate off) and put him in a small bowl on the counter. Mom distracted me...And I left the house with her, completely forgetting about the fish. Came home, and couldn't figure out why there was an emtpy bowl of water on the counter. Looked down, to discover the betta had jumped out and was DRIED TO THE FLOOR. Wet him down enough to loosen his fins and put him back in. Most of the fins sloughed off, but he re-grew them just fine and lived for several more years after that. He was actually my longest lived betta.
Shrimp larvae are coming along fine...Probably will see actual shrimp within a week. Whew!

I think it over ate on the spirolina pellets I dropped in there the other day. I remember thinking I might have over done the feeding, but I was in a hurry and running out the door. It had the same symptoms as my blue ram when he ate an entire algae waffer by himself.....bloated belly and gasping. The ram recovered though and did fine after passing an enormous turd and barfing behind the water sprite...lol...piggy....
That's just my best guess, there's been no problems in this tank and I havn't added anything to it in a very long time...... ![]()

So sorry for your loss, Emg. Koi can be sooo beautiful. And it's so darn frustrating when you think it's something you did. Maybe there was something else wrong and this just exacerbated it.
I'm getting really frustrated over having this new tank in my living room and not having it up yet. Need to pick up stand; need to get cinderblocks; need to paint stand and plywood base. AAAAcCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK!!!! ![]()

I saw my cana laying eggs on the hood last night, when I got up this morning I found that they had all dropped into the water, so I hope she has better luck next time. I also saw a single baby guppy in there yesterday...I'm not seeing it now, so unless he is hiding he musta became somebodies lunch.

The 20 was drained and partially filled with fresh last night. Finished that up today, rinsing with fresh a few times, most of the sand out, and the few critters migrated over to the 40--think the bristleworms and snails will be the only survivors.
Put in the Flourish, didn't rinse quite as well as I maybe should have. Meh, it will settle out. I'll probably pull about half of it out tomorrow and then refill into the sump to prevent it from stirring up too much silt. Then I can pull plants from the 12--get the sword out, and most of the taller bunch plants too. Hopefully that will give the lotus room, and then I can play around with the rest. Thought about going to the LFS that has the leaf fish, but decided I should wait until the tank is at least supporting plants before tempting myself to buy fish!
