Well I have decided to get some Severums for my 75 gal and I have some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket. I will either get the standard greens or if I can find them I will try to get some Heros Sp. Rotkeil. My question is what type of substrate is good for these fish. I don't really want sand but if that is what the Sevs like that is what I will get. What do you guys use for your Sevs.

I'm also ordering a visitherm stealth 250 watt heater, a marineland emperor 400 (adding a 280 to it once the fish get a little bigger), some glass tops and a 48" freshwater T5 light fixture w/ 2 54watt 10,000K lamps.

I still have to do a fishless cycle once I get all the stuff in so it will be a bit of a wait for the fish. Let me know what you think.

Sounds good. I love severums. Gravel is fine for severums. I have always said substrate is a matter of personal preference. Some fish do better with sand but severums don't mind either way. Turquoise severums are nice looking and pretty available. Can't wait to see pics when its all cycled and put together!

Sevs are a good choice. I've had my sevs on both sand and gravel and I they look at act the same either way. They've spawned on both for me.

I have been debating about how many I should keep in my 75. I was thinking 3 would be max. I would really like to get a spawning pair. I was thinking I could get 3 or 4 and see if any of them pair up. Does it take a while for the juveniles to pair up? Would they get to big for the tank before they pair up? I was figuring once I got two I could keep a male & 2 females and bring the fourth back to the LFS. I'm not too sure about my idea though. Would the spawning pair get aggressive with the 3rd fish?

Maybe I asked too many questions in my last post??

So I did a little more research on the Sevs and it seems like 3 may be too many for a 75. Live aquaria says 30 gal tank minimum which is why I was thinking I could get 3 sevs. The more I look it seems like popular opinion says 45 to 55 gal minimum. Would I be alright with 2 sevs in my 75?

I've never kept Severums before, I'd think that 2 of them should be ok in a 75g as long their personalities doesn't clash

Here's some updated pics of my 75gal. All the equipment is in place and I am dosing ammonia to start the cycle. I'll eventually be adding some driftwood once I find a big piece I like.

Looks nice! If it were me, I'd move the two chunks 3rd and 4th from the left so there was a little clearing. The spacing between the rocks looks forced to me. But what to I know--I can't manage to keep any open space in my tanks because of the plants.

If it was my tank I would position the rocks to hide the heater, and put on a dark background to hide the filter, etc..

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm planning on a large piece of driftwood to help cover the filter intake and heater. I'll also eventually be adding a dark background but I'm not sure of what yet.

Derek, I have a couple of young sevs who have paired and spawned (although Junior doesn't quite have it down yet). First couple of times they were around a scant 4" long, although she's a shade bigger. HTH
