I had a nice lady come to buy some zebras today. Since I have a couple of rubbermaids full of plants, I asked if she would like to take some home as well as I normally include them as extras with fish shipped out. She said yes and we went out to the screened terrace where the plants are currently housed.
She was looking into the second rubbermaid which has a heater and filter on it since the contents came from two summer tanks recently broken down. I had been dosing some ammonia into it as well in an effort to keep the filter somewhat cycled. Suddenly she commented, "Did you know you have fry in there?" To which I replied, "No, are you sure?". She was and there were several quarter inch fry swimming around. This is the fourth time I have now found fry in a tank/container which was being dosed with ammonia. My best guess is they are either choprae danios which spawned in their 20 gal Q or else pearl danios which did so in their 10 gal. Q. The eggs must have come over on plants or filter sponges removed when I broke down the summer tanks. Once again I am amazed they managed to hatch and stay alive despite the ammonia addition. I am considering bottling our well water and labelling it: TwoTank's Magic Fish Spawning Elixer ![]()
