Tetra disease?

Hi,

Just wondering is there a disease that neon tetras get that makes their backs go white? I bought 8 neon tetras recently and had 1 myself. All of the new ones I bought died within a few days but the tetra I had is still ok but has a whitish colour on his back which I noticed the others had too. My water is fine and all my other fish are ok so I thought maybe it was a tetra disease? I think I remember reading about one before...

It's called Neon Tetra Disease. So far there's no cure. Here's some more info:

I have managed to contain it though by aggressively removing any fish from the school that show the slightest signs of it. It is primarily spread when the healthy fish pick at the ones weakened by what ever neon tetra disease is. It takes close scrutiny of the remaining fish to catch it before the sick ones spread it to some of the remaining healthy fish, but it can be stopped by culling.

Thanks, I thought I remembered hearing about it before. Presumably it only affects neon tetras and the rest of my fish will be fine then?

Ok Ive just looked up neon tetra disease and apparently cichlids such as angelfish are susceptible to disease! I have 2 angels which I love!! I dont have another tank I could separate them in and all of the tetras have died so if they were going to eat infected fish it would have already happened! what do you think the chances are that they're infected??

It is very easy to confuse NTD with columnaris. IMO, your case sounded like columnaris to me more than NTD. Use erythromycin in this case or furan 2.

I wonder if stress has anything to do with it? I know that neons are very skittish, and it's very hard to end up with all the tetras that you come home with. I was surprised that some of the neons I bought actually made it, since I'd had bad experiences with that situation before. Maybe extra Stress Coat or something to help keep them calm? I don't know, it's just a theory, but it seemed to work for me.
