The lady I was going to get the tank from, gave me some coral instead. Ironic as it would be....the guy who bought the tank, didn't really want the coral.... Just the rock and system...he was buying it for his wife for Christmas.....(yeah, RIGHT ! we all know how that goes...hehe)

Anyway, I picked out a few items...and she took some out as well. She has a little 10gallon for her son that she wants to keep going.

Here's what I picked....not much, just a few things. There was alot of stiff type hair algae and weird marroon bubble algae that I didn't want to add to my tanks, so I was picky......

Just some white polyp type coral and a nice trio of hammer coral ! The only hammers she had in the tank...I made a beeline for it...hehe

They're still a little pouty from the move......I also picked out some yellow green colored mushroom of some type....which I havn't taken pics of yet. That stuff is on a larger rock that has the bubble and hair stuff on it....it's sitting in a 5 gallon with some polythoa type coral I picked out as well. Once it heals up and starts looking spiffy again I'll see if I can chip it off that rock before I had it to either of my tanks

I also connected with the science teacher at the local HS....he has a running science project propagating coral. There's an 800 gallon tank setup somewhere at the school and LOTS of coral frags to choose from. He's invited me to see his system and do some shopping.....ooooo....can't wait !

Hope to have more coral to take pics of come Monday !

Thanks Mark, it is coming along nicely ! I'm looking forward to seeing what Jon has for me on Monday. I'd like to add some more colorful coral in there. I know he has a bunch of zoanthids....we'll see....

Well Mark....feed the need with a little 15 for now...... won't cost you much. I don't have any fancy equipment on that tank.....just a HOB filter (no media or anything, just for water movement), couple of motors off some intank whispers for powerheads....heater, that's it !

I LOVE the color of that coraline in the 15 ! What I have in the 29 is mostly a marroonish color with some dark type of macro growing on it. Not nearly as pretty as the purple.

How about a phosban reactor Joe ? Might give that a try....

Also...do you use tap or Ro/Di water ?

Oh...do you feed frozen foods ? Check out this thread here.... Reef Central Online Community - Phosphate in frozen food

I might try using some phosphate media. I am using RO water, but its from the grocery store water, so I don't know how good it really is. I haven't put anything back into the tank since I killed almost everything off. The only thing in there is are one or 2 hermits and 1 or 2 snails. There is plenty of algae in there for them to eat. I haven't really been doing much of anything to the tank, but the algae keeps on growing. I was thinking of adding a couple of turbo snails and seeing if they help clean things up.

TDS meter? That will tell you if the RO/DI is good. I know the grocery store dispensers here don't get the membranes replaced often enough--the water tastes awful, which to me means something ain't right with it.

Well, they put stickers on the ones here saying when they were last serviced. How well of a service is preformed, who knows. I don't have a TDS meter, maybe I should get one.

There are stickers on the ones here. The problem? They're replaced on a calendar schedule, not on a gallon schedule. So they get replaced every 6 months--even if they quit working 6000 gallons ago.

I'd say it would have to be your water source Joe......maybe you should just try your tap...couldn't be any worse I suppose...

Take some tap water down to an lfs and see if they'll measure your TDS for you....

And I'm sorry, but I have to note that I just NOW figured out that these are new additions.

Too funny OG......

Here's some pics of what I have in a 5 gallon qt for now. Not because I'm worried about parasites or anything.......the tank was running for 10 years with no issues of that sort. I just don't want any of that bubble or hair algae in my tanks !

a couple of somewhat unhappy shrooms....recovering from the move...

These two yellows are on one rock which is inhabited by both algaes and some nuisance type anemones....going to wait till they recover then carefully chisel them off the rock if I can. OR....chisel off the nuisance stuff and leave the shrooms on the rock... I've got time to figure that out...

this guys NOT happy at all ! spillin his guts all over the place !

A nice little clump of polythoas....*shudder*.....nasty buggers ! I break out in hives just lookin at em !

and here's some pics of the nuisance algae...not sure what kind they are...if anyone has any idea..do chime in. She said her tang loved to eat the stuff, but unfortunately.....my tanks are NOT large enough for any tang.........(pretty christmasy colors though.... )

You can also see a little red tube worm type critter in that last pic. I have a few of those in my 15.

....

Those are some really nice additions.

In the last pic however, it looks like you have red flatworms on the algae. If that's the case, move quickly to get rid of them as they reproduce like crazy and will reach plague proportions in no time flat.

Sorry for the following departure from topic: Joephys, yes a phosphate reactor would be a very affordable way to kick start your battle with algae. Also a tds meter would be a good investment, they're only 20 or 30 bucks.

Some nice acquisitions! I am looking forward to seeing the hammer settle in and puff up.

That red algae is definitely a botryocladia species. I haven't dealt with that species, but large turbo snails love the species I have. A grazing blenny (redlip, lawnmower, etc), may also help you out.

The green hairy stuff looks like bryopsis to me, based on the branchiness and coarseness. You might try trick of raising Mg to 1500 temporarily, which seems to work for some people around here.

Those nuisance anemones are pretty. I wish they weren't so nasty.

Is there something specific you are looking at or just the red specs in general?

Slick, I took a good look through a magnifier and those red specs are tiny little bubble algae, like the larger marroon bubbles. Either way, they aren't in the main tank. Those are sitting in a QT tank....with good reason....as far as the algae is concerned anyway. But...just in case.....do six line wrasse eat flatworms ?

The only corals I put in my main tank so far were the hammer and one small branch with some white star polyps on it...AFTER I scraped off the few tiny specs of the hair algae off it.

TODAY I went to see a man about some corals....hehe The science teacher at the local HS who propagates coral. He invited me over to his class to "shop".....so, I did !

This is what I picked up for about 40$

A couple of metalic pink zoas (they're under regular flourescents in my 15, so the color isn't what it should be...I think I'm moving them up to the 29 tomorrow)

A branch of some type of montipora...

This...once it opens up...will be a beautiful dark green star polyp...with light green center. Looks alot like bushy grass when you have a good clump of it...very pretty ! (WHEN it opens)

Another green star polyp type that has longer arms and will grow on the glass. I plan on putting this up on the back of the tank as a backdrop...looks awesome waving in the current !

I saved the best ones for last.....a nice clump of green zoas...

and....a VERY nice couple of clumps of frogspawn....

All and all......I'm very happy with my purchases.....he offered me some VERY nice galaxia, but.....I didn't think I had the room in my tank for one of those....they have a pretty long reach and can be somewhat aggressive.

OH YEAH !! It's my birthday...IT"S my BIRTHDAY !!
