yes--bad water conditions will lead fish to any number of other symptoms--and popeye is a symptom of different infections. Typically the best treatment is clean water--which means more then 50% weekly water changes until the symptoms go away!
Freshwater fish do best when they have fresh water.

Two of my guppies are getting worse. One of my females can't even close her mouth. Tonight I tried to hand-feed her and gave her some penicillin gel in her food. I also put some Bio-Bandage on her extremely pink and inflamed head (I was careful to keep it out of her eyes). I don't think she's going to make it
. I'm doing my best. I'm worried that I will also lose my male. I'm probably going to go ahead and place an order for some Maracyn Plus. I don't know what to do. I have been doing water changes and the water quality is staying consistently good.

I have sad news to report- Sir Gupps has passed away
. I dearly miss all of them, but especially him because he was always the first one up at the top looking for food. He was a very 'personable' fish for a guppy. Unfortunately a few of his fry are now displaying symptoms. I am going to do another water change tonight and the Maracyn plus should be here tommorrow. Until then I am using PimaFix as it is starting to look like a type of fungus. It's hard to tell what it is- one fish had popeye, another red streaks, and now this fry has a large white patch around it's "abdomen." Water Stats: ok... not good... I've just ransacked my fish room looking for my test kit- it's nowhere to be found. This really isn't good. I'll post the stats as soon as I find it!

I got the Maracyn Plus and put it in yesterday- I can already see results! Hopefully they will continue. The only downside to it is that the 'bio-spheres' seem to stick to not only the fish but the plants, the snail's shells, and sides of the aquarium. But if that's what it takes to get my fish on the mend, I can deal with cleaning things up. It doesn't seem to 'faze' the snails or my shrimp. It says that it won't hurt my sponge filter, but you never know. I'm crossing my fingers. And by the way... I am now the proud mommy of 11 mystery snails
. Since I got the water stats under control (and yes, they are staying there ) I decided to go into snails instead of more guppies. I think that I'm going to stay out of guppies and other livebearers for a while... Until I get guppy-fever again ! I'm getting ready to finish that 28hex and will put marisas and haustrums in it. Thanks for all the help everyone! I'll update after the medication-doses are finished.
