Large breeder net?

I bought some swordtails over a year ago that were already full grown and very large. The big female is easily 4 inches long (including her tail). She is quite fast and jumpy so I don't feel comfortable using the more traditional breeder nets I find at the LFS. Anybody have suggestions for a larger one? None of her fry have survived up to this point (eaten by tankmates) and I would like to raise a few more swordtails.

Maybe a 10 gal tank with lots of plants?

I suppose I could catch the female and set her up in another tank, then remove her after I see babies...if I notice them quickly enough. Sounds like a lot more work though.

I have kept swords since my very first tank and have never used a breeder net/trap. I dislike them as they really tend to stress the female. I also have very heavily planted tanks. I have never had a shortage of babies and have never mmoved or removed females re spawning.

You can use java moss on the bottom and finer ground cover plants. I also use a lot of watersprite both planted and floating which also provide great fry cover.

You might want to consider this rather than moving here around or using a trap.

Well...it might not be the swords eating the fry...probably clown loaches. I'll throw together a 20 long if I can spare a heater. The "my aquariums" link in my .sig is outdated. Swordtails are in a 75 gallon waterbridged together with a 55 gallon. The 5 clown loaches stay in the 75 and the angel stays in the 55. Guppies and the swordtails go back and forth once in a while.

Nope. I'm still working on getting a clear acrylic bridge. ATM I'm using 4 inch white PVC...which is probably why the fish avoid it for the most part...dark inside. I also need to build tank hoods, get some new lighting, and paint both stands to match.

I never liked breeder nets. When I had guppies in a 10, I just used a make-shift tank divider and blocked 3 inches off one side to put the female in.
