Default I can't believe I bought one !

Went into the LFS today and saw something I've never seen before.......well, I've SEEN them, but not in this color.....

Tiger platy.......just HAD to have it....

I never thought I would ever buy a platy.....I've been tempted once or twice by the blues.....but generally I have no desire to own fish like platies or sword tails because they're so common and everyone has them. This one was unusual enough to grab my attention. They only had one left at the store and I grabbed it...ummm...for my son's tank....

I'm going to have to go up and check it's gills....I didn't notice them being that red until I looked at these pics....maybe they aren't really as bad as they look here.....either way, it's a cool fish and if they're irritated they should heal up quickly in his tank...it's clean...

Jeesh....I hope I didn't get snookered and buy a painted fish ! Would serve me right...lol....I usually never buy a fish without knowing what it is...and, it WAS a platy so I knew it wouldn't grow to 6ft or cause issues with the other fish.....but.....hmmm.....

I did a google on striped tiger platies and this is all I came up with....it has the stripes but not the black fins.....

I guess I'll know if the stripes fade off and it ends up being a plain white black finned platy

I don't think so, Eileen. Most of the painted or tattooed fish have obvious color spots where the needle was inserted. This one looks natural. At least that's what I think.
He's really cute!

Yeah, I looked really closely at it in the lfs and it didn't looked painted to me there......but ....then I didn't notice the gills either, which...btw.....don't look as bad as they do in the pics. I went up and checked after that first post...it looks good !

Platies are fun! And very colorful. I wasn't impressed with them until I got 4 for my first tank. You will love them.

It's a cool looking fish, EMG. It looks like a calico platy that ended up with some stripes...

Colored fish look really fake. That fish doesn't look colored to me. There are so many varieties of fish out there, espically with live bearers, you cant just assume what something is based on its colors.

That really happens? They tattoo fish? Can I get one with a skull and cross-bones on it?

Yeah, and it's not like the fish line up to have the ink injected into them. They call them "Tattooed" or "Painted" fish. Glassfish, white skirt tetras, silver mollies are usually the ones I see. Around Valentine's day they have a lot of them with hearts tattooed on them. I hear that the tattooed fish don't live that long, and are usually in pretty poor health after they are "painted." I think it's really sad.

They use lasers to tattoo as well:

The thing that angers me is that the tattoos do nothing to increase the visual appeal of the fish, they just look sad, and pained. I can hardly bear to look at what would be a cute fish so deformed and tortured.

It's a nasty business for sure.....but my fish isn't dyed, colored OR tatooed ! Just a mutant strain of mollie someone came up with that caught my eye....I had a tank with room for it, so I bought it....

Sorry for the hijack, EMG. I was just responding to Canardman. I know your fish isn't tattooed.
