Default Endlers

I Saw some Endlers at My Favorite LFS and am considering getting a couple of pairs. I can keep them isolated from the guppies pretty easily until I figure out what I'm doing with Guppies. My big question is will I have any trouble with these guys harrassing my Cherry Shrimp? I have had Guppy endlers crosses before, Which basically Acted just like Guppies. Does this hold true for The pure bred Strains?

Dave,
These guys should leave your shrimp alone, so do not worry. I keep mine with Amano and no one has EVER been pestered. As how they act, yeah pretty much like guppies. But the only difference I have noticed is that they leave their fry alone and breed very well. This weekend, I just got some more females and a few more males for my colony.

My Plan is to go to the LFS Friday and see what they still have, I'm also working on getting some Dwarf Cichlids from Mooman and need to make sure I don't overbook the Quarantine capabilities. Either way I'm Thinking I'll end up with a couple apirs and see how they do for breeding. Some folks claim they are rare and hard to find, other seem to think they are everywhere. Either way they are pretty cool little fish.

Good luck dave, they are great little fish, but many lfs do not sell females. They only buy the males. For some reason, they shy away from them. I personally think that many breeds do not sell them to keep the prices a little higher. They do breed like guppies but do not eat their fry.

Tricksterpup,

I don't think the endlers at my lfs are purebreds, but would still like to give them a try. Do the endler/guppy hybrids eat their fry? Also, is the amount of fry given birth to about the same as a guppies?

Thanks - Jighead

As far as I know, no to the eating of fry but There is always a first time.
And the amount of fry is about the same. You will have boat loads in a healthy colony. If you want some pure breds, I have a few email address I could send you or you can always try Alloddballaquatics.com. I know he usually will have some pretty cheap per pair. Its just the shipping and handling that costs. But if you have someone near you who is willing to get fish, you can lower that cost.

I got them last night. 2 males 4 females $5.98 each (Ouch) The ones at my LFS are raised by a local hobbyist, and she sells a few at a time to the LFS. I'm sure I can do the same if I chose. I FIgure in about 6 months, I'll want to trade out some males with someone to refresh the gene pool. I figure if the ones I have are all from the same source There may be some Family resemblence. Either way the males are awesome looking fish. The females look like deformed Guppies IMPO. I can see why The males might sell better than the Females, but I would not buy them without having pairs.

BTW my Guppies do not and never have eaten their young. I have had multiple strains and owned literally hundreds of guppies over the years and have never once had them cannabilize. In the Grow out tank where I was raising my feeders There is no auto feeder, which means the fish go 4 straight days every week without food. Even in that tank they do not eat the young. Any thoughts on this?

Now your question, I have never had problems with my normal/wild Guppies eating their fry. Never, but for the more fancy ones, espeically the yellow guppies, I have had problems. I have spotted females grabbing yellow fry while the grey ones are left alone in the tank. I think its very similer to albinoism. These fry are easily seen and then caught by the larger fish, while the normals are left alone.

My Endlers are almost candidates for a species only tank. Even though tiny in size, they harrass much bigger fish. They're always first to eat and chase others away from the food.
