Question lemonjuice & Aiptasia

can lemon juice be used in small tanks to nuke Aiptasia, or will the acidity added to the water (which to my understanding should be base) affect things in a nano too much?

I think that it might lower the pH too much in a nano tank. If you need to add kalkwasser after a water change, I've heard that injections of it will do the trick on glass anemones.

Either one can potentially alter the pH. The trick is to monitor. I've used kalkwasser injections with success--the key is to monitor and treat them immediately. Usually in larger tanks it takes 2-3 treatments to eradicate them.

That's why I recommended using the kalkwasser that you would use anyway on a water change...that way it doesn't mess up the pH any.

Kalkwasser injections to kill aiptasia is not the same as using kalkwasser during a water change. To inject, you make a paste and inject the paste--for other purposes, you basically 'soak' the kalkwasser and then use the water, excluding the precipitate.

Whether it's kalkwasser, kalk paste or lemon juice, a few ml in several gallons won't make a huge difference in pH. If anything, the kalk paste will have a stronger effect, because it's more concentrated and Ca(OH)2 is a strong base. The acids in lemon juice are relatively weak, and far more dilute.

Did not realize that part! I'm going to slink back to my freshwater corner now.

childawg, dont slink so quickly! your input is appretiated, and you obviously had a better understanding of the situation than me anyway (i had no clue that you could use kalkwasser for injections) zanzimog just has a funny way of knowing more than any of us...

soo, thanks for the advice! and just how many ML of lemon Juice does it take to kill a large aiptasia?

I used a dropper to squirt a good dose of lemon juice in the aptasia I had. Did the trick.....well, that and the peppermint shrimp that I have in there now...

Dang peppermints have done NADA to control the glass in my hubby's tank. He's been using Joe's Juice, which is probably a kalkwasser mix. Don't think he'll ever totally get rid of them.

Repeat treatment is usually best. Peppermints are hit or miss. I've no clue what, but apparently something in the reef here likes them. We had a few come in with some corals, too small to treat, so we figured we'd monitor and treat once they grew...And now they're completely gone. We have several hitch hikers that are unidentified, but nothing bugs the other anenome in the tank, so who knows?

Liquid calcium is another option other than lemon juice. You just have to be careful around your coral.

I have 3 peppermints in my reef.....before I put them in there the aptasia was taking over everywhere.....after they were in there for a few weeks ALL my aptasia is gone ! Even the larger ones...which surprised me because I had read that peps don't touch the bigger ones...

Wow, this is an old thread, how did it get started back up with a smiley face?

I have read that aptasia aren't a favorite food of peppermint shrimp, and they typically won't eat them if they are well fed.

I used lemon juice on my aiptasia in my 5.5g. It never really killed them, just seemed to piss them off. Then I got a peppermint shrimp. Then my aiptasia problem was solved.

I had the same results, they would kind of curl up and hide for a few days, then bounce back.

Old thread but I will add on this . I had hitchhikers on some live rock I bought.

Aptasia. Well I use the Joe's Juice stuff. Works nearly instantly on them. A little squirt into the mouth. Insta butt kicking of aptasia.

Its the hidden ones I had to stock some peppermints to remove. And since I have had several peppys into the main tank...I have not seen any Aptasia come backs or hitchhikers rear there ugly heads yet.
