Java moss

That looks cool with all the bubbles. Is that moss actually pearling? Or have you just done a water change

Yep, it's a pearling. I find it pearls really good but it's sitting right at the water line beneath a whole lot of light. I swear those low light plants explode into life if you give them more light than what is usually stated.

All of those java moss pics are amazing! what am I doing wrong? Mine has some green growth, but much of it is brown. It is bound to a piece of driftwood.

Pearling refers to the oxygen bubbles made by the plants during photosynthesis. The bubbles cling to the plants and look like little pearls.

I've had the best luck with my Java Moss in troublesome tanks when I move it closer to the light source and/or decrease the temperature of the tank a bit (when possible). I still have a 5 gallon hex tank that WILL NOT grow Java Moss, but it does GREAT in every other place I try it.

As an update let me add that I recently tried growing Java Moss in a tank at work in a city 40+ miles from home. I had a tank there for 6 months or so.

The water there was so different that I could not get the Java Moss to thrive at work the way it naturally does at home. I never did figure out what the problem was, but it had to be water related.

Some people are just going to get lucky and have an easier time of some plants due to their tap water.

I think Im gonna add some Java Moss when I finish "re-doing" my tank and get some driftwood and rocks in there. It looks great.
