Thanks, thats an old shot. The thread is from august so the picture is at least that old or older. The tank doesn't look like that anymore. The stuff went from about 6 small plants to 1/3 of the tank so I pulled almost all of it out. It is slowly getting to the point where it will explode again though.

Joe - are you sure that's Val.? I've grown all kinds of Val. and never seen it look quite like that. Especially any type of spiral or corkskrew Val.
Looks more like Sagittaria subulata of some type to me.

It could be, that is how it was sold when I bought it. I think that vallisneria spiralis is Italian vall, and that sprial vall is something different. I remember it confusing me at some point and when I looked it up, its just that the latin name is similar to the word spiral. I don't really know for sure though.

Val. spiralis has flat leaves. The 'spiralis' species name refers to the flower stalk, which coils, not to the leaves at all. And I promise you it does coil. The tank varietes of this plant appear to be entirely female BTW, so there is frequent opportunity to see these spiralling flower stalks and their insignificant blooms.

Don't get confused by expecting species or variety names to be always obviously descriptive of the vegatative plant (or fish). Do not expect Val 'nana' to be small in the sense of short - the leaves are almost as long as Jungle Val, just very thin.

I have seen that occur with regard to plant size; ie. Cryptocoryne pygmea which refers to flower size not plant size, but was unaware there was a Val. that was in that category.
Thanks, once again for the heads up on that one Robert.

Corkscrew val is the one that, well, looks like a corkscrew, I would guess.

Looks like Italian Val to me. I've got some in my son's 10gal, and it doesn't grow too tall, relatively speaking. But man does it send out runners fast. I just started with one sickly little bunch I divided into 3 rootings, and now they've quadrupled the number of leaves in a month via runners and just more leaves from the original plantings. Just a little fish poo makes this stuff have a population explosion.

I've got giant val in my big tank...omgarsh, this stuff can get 3 feet long. Planted a couple sickly looking ones, and now I'm getting the Amazon look.

JoePhys, I sure like your setup.

Aye, my jungle val, which I wouldn't mind replacing, commonly get leaves in the 5' range before I trim them up. I know it doesn't like to get trimed, but it just keeps on growing and growing and growning . . .

RTR and Hound, I'm pulling out 6 foot leaves from my 100gal. Good Lord, I need some shorter stuff.

Those Italian Vals the fish dealer sold me for my son's 10gal? They're all 3' long now! NOT Italian Vals, for sure. Trimming and pulling just to stay ahead.

Joe, would you be willing to sell some of that shorter Val? Looks like what I need. The stuff I have is just too doggone long.

Regards, N-A

NA, I have italian val that gets four to five feet easy--the Jungle val I have in there gets long as well, but the leaves are distinctly different.

Val is not always easy to distinguish between the many forms, excepting Jungle Val which is much larger and thicker leafed. It can in general behave a bit like many Crypts, varying growth form with tank conditions. LFS or chain store accuracy in labeling is never to be trusted.

I do believe you're right...these seem to be different from the thick-bodied jungle val leaves.
